Foxenburg Goats Cheese

About Foxenburg

A friendly stampede … you are in goat land!

Your soul will simply sigh with happiness on arrival at Foxenburg’s bustling farm yard the handsome home of hand-made goat cheese and yoghurts. Slowly crafted. Award winners. Farm-house flair!

And you cannot leave the farm without smacking your lips on our Certified Organic Extra Virgin olive oil and to-die-for table olives – included in your cheese  tour.

Alles eg, plaasvars. Van grond tot mond. Die ware Jakobyn.

The air is fresh and filled with animated conversations between all that is alive in a natural, organic environment at the foot of the protected Groenberg:  Swiss Saanen and Black Alpine goats grazing contentedly in a breath-taking landscape … waterbirds skiing on dams … jumping fish … peacocks … cackling hens and furious cockerels  … jumping goat kids … long-bearded rams surveying the world through eyes of ancient sages … a tractor rumbling by with hay bales.

It is a working farm … and you are likely to be welcomed by busy goat farmer Marianne Hemmes, keeping a beady eye on the health and happiness of her goats … calling them by names… ! Kiki, Konsternasi  …  and not to miss Tina, the lucky rescue goat, all the way from Pondoland!

Husband Jan Hemmes is in the background, a techno boffin making sure all the various technologies of a working farm are in sound order.

In the cheesery, amidst huge, shining steel vats, filled with whirling, fresh goat milk –  straight from two daily sessions of milking – you will find Foxenburg’s cheesemaker. Wini Borchard has been crafting award-winning cheeses and yoghurts for the past six years in this lush fynbos landscape.

Wini uses 100% whole goat milk – free of artificial preservatives, hormones and antibiotics.

She checks and packs each hand-crafted cheese manually. Why? Because this is Foxenburg … the home of fabulous, joyous quality. Infused with the magical, uncompromising  touch of nature. Straight from the warm heart of Foxenburg Estate.

Good for creatures, good for cheese … a biodiversity terrain

It is all goodness … and certified so.

The farm is a recognized priority biodiversity site in the Cape Floristic region. It is a partner of Cape Nature’s stewardship program  – with a nature reserve on a large part of the farm.

High mountain terrains are good for goat’s milk. It affects cheese maturation and enhances aroma. You will taste the distinct flavours and textures so typical of Foxenburg’s cheeses.

Last, but not least … the farm is a member of the Renosterveld conservancy – the largest remaining intact piece of Renosterveld left in the Western Cape.

Come stay in our self-catering cottages… And leave your foot prints on sacred ground…

Organic table olives

Be sure you get to our olives before our goats do…! A goat will run a mile and jump a fence to heaven and back for an olive leaf or two! However, in spite of our goats’ superior taste buds in their lush fynbos valley – we make sure that we have a yearly small production of organic black mission table olives – selected for quality, size and colour.

Welcome to our olive press barn where cheese tasting takes place … met hartlike gasvryheid onder die Groenberg!
